What to expect during an endocrinology examination

Examination process and procedures
- Medical history: Collection of personal and family history with a review of any health changes since the last visit.
- Review of medical documentation: Evaluation of previous test results and reports from other specialists.
- Anthropometric assessment:
- Measurement of height and weight
- Evaluation of body proportions (upper-to-lower segment ratio)
- Body mass index (BMI) calculation
- Head circumference measurement and waist-to-hip ratio assessment
- Growth and development monitoring:
- Determination of target height and evaluation of annual growth
- Growth chart creation and analysis
- Puberty stage assessment
- Bone age evaluation using an X-ray of the left hand
- Physical examination: Focused on identifying changes typical of glandular disorders or physical anomalies.
Special procedures and counseling for type 1 diabetes (T1D)
- Analysis of self-monitoring glucose logs in children with T1D
- Review and interpretation of AGP-CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) data
- Adjustment of basal and bolus insulin doses on insulin pumps
- Calculation of insulin sensitivity factors and insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios
Additional assessments and guidance
- Interpretation of laboratory results and dynamic testing
- Calculation and assessment of HOMA-IR index (insulin resistance evaluation)
- Nutritional advice, caloric intake recommendations, and creation of individualized meal plans
After the examination and review of all medical records, a preliminary or final diagnosis is made. If necessary, additional tests are recommended before determining further treatment. Particular attention is given to patient motivation, improving therapy adherence, and education on disease management.
