Specialist kidney and urinary tract care for children at Milmedika
Apr 30, 2026
Kidney and urinary tract problems in children are not always easy to notice. A child may not have pain, and the first signs can be mild or unclear - such as frequent urinary infections, changes in urination, swelling, tiredness, changes in urine, poor growth, or high blood pressure. In these situations, it is important to have a specialist evaluation and understand what is causing the symptoms.

Pediatric nephrology consultations are now available at Milmedika clinics with Dr. Branko Lutovac, specialist in pediatrics and subspecialist in nephrology. Dr. Lutovac is a physician at the Institute for Children’s Diseases of the Clinical Centre of Montenegro, with extensive experience in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring kidney and urinary tract diseases in children.
A pediatric nephrologist should be consulted when there is a suspicion of congenital kidney or urinary tract anomalies, including changes that may be detected during pregnancy, such as prenatal hydronephrosis. These findings do not always mean that a child has a serious condition, but they should be monitored after birth so that any need for further diagnostics or treatment can be recognized on time.
Urinary tract infections are one of the most common reasons for seeing a pediatric nephrologist. Burning during urination, frequent urination, fever, abdominal pain, unpleasant-smelling urine, or blood in the urine may point to an infection. If infections keep coming back, it is important to find the cause, because untreated or poorly monitored infections can affect kidney health.
Some children may also have vesicoureteral reflux, a condition in which urine flows back from the bladder toward the kidneys. This can increase the risk of repeated infections and requires careful assessment, monitoring, and an individual treatment plan.
A specialist evaluation is also important for children who have daytime or nighttime wetting, frequent urination, sudden urges to urinate, difficulty holding urine, or other urination problems. These symptoms should not always be treated as just a “phase” or a habit, because they can have different causes.
Dr. Lutovac also diagnoses and treats urinary tract stones in children, nephrotic and nephritic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, and conditions that may appear through swelling around the eyes or in the legs, foamy, dark, or bloody urine, fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure, or delayed growth and development.
Obesity and high blood pressure in children and adolescents are also becoming increasingly important, as they can place a long-term burden on the kidneys. Early recognition and regular monitoring can help protect kidney health and guide further care when needed.
The goal of a pediatric nephrology consultation is to understand the child’s symptoms, detect possible problems early, and plan the next steps in diagnosis, monitoring, or treatment.
